I always wanted to create one of those viral photoshopped memes.

Future project in the works: a base for this totally sweet lamp my mom made me out of a bottle of Tokaji wine I brought back from Hungary for her.
I’ll probably write more in depth on this at some point, but there’s a certain amount of genetics involved here.

There is a very real joy in creating your own furniture.

You should be forewarned, however, that once you begin down the path of building your own coffee table, shelf. gun cabinet, kegerator, etc, you may not be able to stop. And then you must begin playing with the devil’s arithmetic.

DIY furniture may seem cheap at first but it will never match the affordability of Ikea’s wood pulp monstrosities. In fact if you even begin delving into actual hardwoods you may rack up a bill as high as one you would get at a craftsman’s workshop. And then you still have to build it. And then you come to the sad realization that you are not yourself a craftsman.

This is where your standard pressure treated 2 x 4 lumber comes to the rescue. You want customizable furniture and the thrill of building something with your bare hands? Go to a hobby store. You want all of that but not on a yuppyie’s budget? Buy a skill saw… and a whole lot of 2 x 4s.

Above are examples of my multimedia center that I built out of an old family worktable (sentimental value) and some 2 x 4s.

Its a lifestyle.
